For the first time, Sify.com presents a power list of top five actresses who matter. The trouble in Indian cinema is that it has always been male dominated but the trend has changed rapidly in Bollywood and slowly now in Kollywood. After the success of films like Chandramukhi and Ghajini, the female star power has emerged.
Our actresses corner much media mileage and heroes like Vijay or Vikram are particular with whom they are paired. In fact the trade feels that for the first time due to the influence of youth audience, actresses like Asin and Nayantara is able to generate an opening!
An actress career is short-lived and full of pitfalls. One wrong move ( Sneha) or marriage (Laila), and you end up with no work. Fame is there only for a brief period unlike heroes who can go on and on till they retire or get into politics!
THE TOP 5 Asin- She was the queen of Kollywood in 2005 with the biggest and best roles in her kitty. Her dream run began with Ullam Ketkume followed by blockbuster Ghajini which made her a big brand. Then came Sivakasi, a super hit and Maja an average grosser. She became the craze among the youth. Her infectious smile and inimitable dancing abilities are her USP’s.
Future- Does not look too rosy, as she has not signed a single film in 2006. Her Godfather, with Ajit that she signed two years back may be her only release in the first half of the year!
Nayantara- She did not have a lengthy role but she was there in the two blockbusters Chandramukhi and Ghajini. And in Sivakasi she sizzled in an item song with Vijay.
Nayan emerged as the new bombshell and sizzler of Kollywood and now men will buy tickets just to see her on screen.
Future- She has no films with top actors who really matter. Her films in the first half of 2006 include Kalvanin Kathali, Thalaimagan, Vallavan and E.The buzz is that she is moving away to Tollywood where she has struck gold.
Trisha- Fact is that she has been delivering consistently at the box-office till Tirupachi. But after that a string of disasters followed like Ji, Aaru and now Aathi. As the svelte beauty was concentrating more on Telugu cinema where she is the ‘numero uno’, her Tamil market came down. But still she is hot with the young audience.
Future- Has Something Something with Jayam Ravi and the big question is whether Vikram, Vijay and Suriya will give her one more round in their future projects?
Jyothika - Though her quota with all top stars have come to an end, Jo is still the best. Her Chandramukhi was a blockbuster. Jo’s USP was always her bubbly and cute expressions which is now over exposed and she looks jaded (Saravana).
Future: Her career and personal life hinges around Suriya as they come together again in Jillendru Oru Kathal. She has June R where Suriya does a cameo and Vetayadu Vilayadu!
Namitha- She is the oomph girl among the masses in B and C stations which do matter. Though she did not pair with ‘A’ grade actors, this bombshell did four films last year and was able to make Englishkaran and Chanakya profitable for the distributors.
Future: She will continue to sizzle in her forthcoming films like Kovai Brothers, Nee Venumda Chellum, Pachakuthirai etc etc…till a new bombshell emerges!
Please note- The above ratings are based purely on the box-office pull of the actresses and their popularity among the youth audiences. Remember when we do our next survey six months from now (in June), the ratings may change drastically. A new breed of heroines like Sandhya, Shriya, Sada, Kamalinee, Kamna among others are waiting to replace the current favourites.
