Love at first sight can sometimes go wrong! Think of an instance in which you accidentally meet the pretty girl in your dreams on the very first day you join college and instantly fall in love with her. After a few days of effort to understand the who-what-where of the girl, you are shocked when you come to know that she is your senior by two years! Most budding heroes would definitely give up the very thought of wooing her, fearing the social consequences, others would delete their technicolor dreams and go for a platonic relationship, while a very few would simply ignore the difference in age and seniority, and continue to woo the 'akka'! One such exceptional case is Prabhu (Balaji Balakrishnan), who want to really give it a try! Sounds interesting? That is the basic plot of director Boopathy Pandian's Kadhal Solla Vandhen, a laugh riot gelled with sentiments!
Who is in it?
Balaji Balakrishnan stars as Prabhu, a first year Economics student in an arts college in Trichy; Meghana Raj appears as Sandhya, a third year Economics student in the same campus; Karthik Sabesh is Prabhu's friend; reigning king Arya appears in a cameo as a physician who advises Prabhu in matters of the heart, meaning, telling him how to romance a girl.
What is it about?
From neighbours to parents, everybody has a very poor opinion of Prabhu, a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky guy whose prime time-pass is to hurt others. But people suddenly see changes in his life. Yes, that change has come because he is in love. Sandhya is the girl, his love at first sight who stepped into his life on his first day in college. Even without knowing her name or any other details, Prabhu has already sung duets with her in his fascinating, romantic world, confident that she is the true love in his life. But things change and even worsen when he realizes that Sandhya is elder to him, studying in the same department as a final year student! However, after a few twists and turns, Prabhu finally decides to go with his instincts and continues to dog her footsteps. Will he able to steal her heart or not? That forms the rest of the film.
Performances
Kadhal Solla Vandhen is basically a romantic flick full of comedy, though it gets a bit serious towards the climax. The script does not demand too much effort from the hero Balaji Balakrishnan of Kana Kaanum Kaalangal fame, but in his combo with Karthik Sabesh, Balaji definitely lifts the show up to public expectations with his terrific timing in comedy scenes. Kudos to the director for not having induced any forced formulaic comedy. Popular Kannada-Telugu actress Meghana Raj is gorgeous and perfectly fits in her role as Sandhya. The major strength of the film, besides its intrinsic comedy, is the outstanding camera work by Rana, Yuvanshankar Raja's fantastic music and neat editing by K.L. Praveen and N.B. Srikanth. Still, the makers could have avoided the song 'Saamy Varugudhu' which seems superfluous. The plot in which Prabhu tries to save Sandhya's friend from a suicide attempt could also be removed. Coming to other minus aspects, the climax is very predictable and the last scene (in which Sandhya arrives at the college after five years) is confusing. Otherwise, Kadhal Solla Vandhen is entertaining and worth a watch.
