You are right. Dogs are better than diamonds as friends. Even Mahabharata agrees with you. When the Pandava brothers went on the final Yatra, only a dog accompanied Dharma and his brothers. He argued that the dog should also be allowed into the heaven. How much love and kindness he had shown to a dog that too just before his death. Ultimately the dog revealed itself as the god of Dharma. Whatever the outcome is, even Vyasa chose only a dog, not any other animal.
