Once a friend of mine was in the same situation when he was in college. His father was a temple priest and he went away on some assignment. My friend was at home at that time (during vacation). Some farmer wanted to do an abhishekham to the deity (Shiva) and came to the priest's house with rice, fruits, coconut etc. My friend told him his father was out of town. The farmer did not mind and he wanted the son to do the pUjA. My friend was in a quandry. He did not know any pUjA mantrams. However he did not want to admit his ignorance. He took all the materials with him and recited the whole Vishnu Sahasranamam (that was the only slokham he memorized as a student) in Shiva temple. The farmer was pleased that the son did the pUjA for a longer time than the father did ever.
