Simply because the rulers are atheist does not mean that they cannot interfere in the spritual/religious practices of the people. They represent the people and they have to do what is right for the people, whether they belive in it or not personally. When it comes to prayer it is simple common sense that the devotee should understand what he is praying for, putting a condition like pray only in a foreign language is akin to destroying their religion. No wonder there are some many conversions from Hinduism(did somebody say that the vedics are the vatican army to destroy hinduism). Saying that GOD can understand better only in one language is like saying that GOD is inferior to me intellectually (I know 3 languages equally well)!
In TN tamil should be the language of worship and in other states people should use their mother tongue to communicate with GOD with no middle man, if in other languages there are not enough litreature for liturgical purposes, we have a plethora of such stuff in sanskrit and tamil, Indias two great classical language (though the former is a mongrel artificial language). Instead of wasting time/resources in reviving a dead language (crying over spilt milk) let us atleast safeguard what we have, TAMIL !
