He needs to stick to here and now, small steps, manageable goals for the short term: getting employed (check), getting out of the ghetto (not check). If he wants to get into the military, he should do it in a way that doesn't interfere with other parts of his life by being a reservist (check) in a service that will take him sooner rather than later if at all (not check).
