Most of us won't here such stories because well educated people facing this type of situation withdraw from the public and head into the twilight.

I heard this from another local scholar who himself was in doldrums for 15 years and had his savings to rely on. He "came put" when his secured a really good job from a member of his family and began travelling for work and -establishing ties. He was now back in mainstream. He told me that there are many others out there.

He also told me that to keep their sanity they would go out nearly everyday. The National Library was one of many common location.



What a change. I can imagine Ngiam Tong Dow and Lim Chong Yah becoming two unemployed men in a one-room rented flat.
