I bet it has got something to do with religion.

Korea was under Japanese and Chinese rule in their "modern " history right up to the end of world war two and almost had their culture and identity taken away from them. When they gained self-rule, they vowed fervently to rise above their previous rulers and worked darn hard to achieve that, which they have (at least the south). Prior to this, they were OEM for Jap biggies like Mitsubishi and Sony, learned everything they could from them, and with their own effort, even surge ahead of them is some areas. It was a national effort.
Christianity for them came mostly from the Yankees, and although growing in popularity, is still a minority among them.
Like Sgns, Koreans have NS too and in a drinking bout with some of them once, I found out many of them disliked being in the military too. But their situation is totally different from Peesai.
