It does however seem like the agent did a good deal of the work and one wonders how far these losers would have been able to go if they were provided with a bomb.

Their lawyer will probably explore the entrapment angle. The question is, how much of what they did was the result of the FBI agent's actions? If that agent becomes the only variable, then it is damaging to the case.

Suppose for example the agent cooked up the plot, endoctrinated the men, brainwashed them to do his bidding, built the bomb and told them exactly what to do. Then but for that agent, there probably couldn't have been a crime. That's an extreme example, but essentially the same thing has happened in the past.
