Not all leftists are the same. Some are principled decent and honest, the same is true for some rightists.

There is however a breed of "leftist" who just wear the cloak of leftism but in fact they are either misguided or are just opportunists who have their own selfish agendas. Unfortunately this breed has managed to spread itself quite widely. One cannot argue with this breed because:

They advocate idealism but only so long as their idealism affects other people. They soon give up such notions if it affects them and theirs personally.
They accept their own ideology as a matter of faith and dogma. They don't let the facts, reality and common sense to stand in the way of their fiction.
They try to take the high moral ground but they get dumb founded as soon as their protagonists too acknowledge the need for morals but not just in a "one sided way"
They like to preach but they wear blind folds and block their ears. They don't want to see the real world as it is nor do they want to listen to anyone who does not reinforce their own misconceptions.
