Still having trouble with not adding the speeds of things travelling in opposite directions when viewed from the point of view of the objects in the "here and now"

might help.
"c" is the velocity of light and is usually represented by 1.
the other velocities "u" and "v" are represented by a percentage of 1.
ie 80% the speed of light would be 0.8
