Before the rubella vaccine was available when I was a kid, when any local child got German measles all the kids who hadn't had it were sent to visit, particularly the girls. Rubella in children is, for the most part, a mild illness but it has horrifying effects on babies in the womb. The vaccine today makes such visits unnecessary.
