I am not aware of neither have I experienced a Buddhist practitioner being offended by another's belief in any aspect of Lord Buddha's teachings (or alleged teachings) If it is sincere and honest.

Vanuatu,
His Holiness is not a representative for all Buddhists nor do I believe he would want to be.
However what he said there seems innocuous enough.
I must add that I hold him in deep respect.
