rather than spirits, such as fairies, possibly gandhabba refers to creative energy or to the creative principle, i.e., 'gods' of creation

gandhabba seems to refer fragrant seeds, pollens, etc, which are the actual creators of life

The gandhabbas are associated with fragrant substances, no doubt because the word is based on the stem gandha, meaning scent.
