I think this is a very important point, and one lost on those who consider belief in literal rebirth a prerequisite to being a real Buddhist. Yes indeed.

My own opinion is that there's no point in speculating about past lives or rebirth after I'm dead because its completely irrelevant to my present life and to my practice here and now.
