i think you are likely to receive many different responses to your questions from different buddhists

when i listened to some Tibetan teachers (although many Mahayanists will disagree), they explained the various Hindu dieties were incorporated into Buddhism (to create 'Mahayana') because Buddhism was losing its popularity amongst the Indian peoples. there are more Hindu deities in Mahayana Buddhism than just Vishnu

thus, whether "spacious" or "ambitious" or "prudent survival" is subject to debate
