Yes, when people take the teaching aids to replace the Teaching, then in that sense, 'idolatry' occurs because then they forget what was the original resolve and practice and it unleases a series of unwholesome causes and conditions unfavourable for a cultivator's mind and life, not because it offends a creator's ego somewhere out there.
