often, traditional concepts (such as 'soul') do not blend easily with new concepts (such as 'not-self')

'soul' is an intrinsic personal substance where as 'not-self' is relinquishing the sense of ownership

although the buddha used the term 'anatta', it is not really the opposite of 'atma' because, to the buddha, 'atma' was an ignorant thought construct rather than an intrinsic personal substance

thus the buddha taught 'anatta' (not-self) rather than 'niratta' (no self)

the buddha taught there is no real "self". but the buddha taught the sense of "self" can certainly occur

in fact, the buddha taught birthing, assuming or construing "self" is the root of suffering

the buddha said:

There is the case where an uninstructed person assumes form to be the self. That assumption is a fabrication. Now what is the cause, what is the origination, what is the birth, what is the coming-into-existence of that fabrication? To an uninstructed person, touched by that which is felt born of contact with ignorance, craving arises. That fabrication is born of that.

Parileyyaka Sutta He assumes consciousness to be the self or the self as possessing consciousness or consciousness as in the self or the self as in consciousness. He is seized with the idea that 'I am consciousness' or 'Consciousness is mine.'

As he is seized with these ideas, his consciousness changes & alters and he falls into sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress & despair over its change & alteration.

***

He does not assume consciousness to be the self or the self as possessing consciousness or consciousness as in the self or the self as in consciousness. He is not seized with the idea that 'I am consciousness' or 'Consciousness is mine.'

As he is not seized with these ideas, his consciousness changes & alters, but he does not fall into sorrow, lamentation, pain, distress or despair over its change & alteration.

Nakulapita Sutta 'I am' is a construing. 'I am this' is a construing. 'I shall be' is a construing. 'I shall not be' is a construing.

Construing is a disease, construing is a cancer, construing is an arrow. By going beyond all construing, he is said to be a sage at peace.

MN 140 it follows, it can be said "rebirth" or to "take birth again" is something "personal"

if we do good actions we believe "I" collect good results. If we do evil actions, we believe "I" collect evil results.

this is another meaning of "rebirth"

kind regards
