No doubt, some people hold on tight - don't they? Fortunately, I do not hear the term used, at all - although I do see it online, in publications first written pre 1990 and in current forums
Try looking for transcripts of teachings by well known tulkus after 1990.
I heard the term used offline up until I stopped going to Tibetan centres in the the 2000's.
You can also find the term used on the regularly updated websites of lineages and specific teachers.
