Which is unfortunate, given that Pali "Jhana" -> Sanskrit "Dhyana" --> Chinese "Ch'an" --> Japanese "Zen". Jhana starts out with a clear definition, and at the end of the chain "What is Zen?" becomes a koan. Alas!

Well in Zazen we are not about stages... which I see Jhana has. At the end I think Zazen is about Samatha and Vipassana or at least the instruction I have been given equates more with the later.
