A hypothetical: So this woman I'm dating tells me I'm handsome and she seems to be expecting a comment back about herself. She's not very pretty, but i like to think about inner beauty and what kind of person she is. What should I tell her? I don't want to lie, and if I hesitate, she'll notice I'm being untruthful. I don't want to hurt the poor woman's feeling, but i still enjoy the time and want to continue dating her, without being stabbed in the eye with a fork.

It is physically impossible to sustain a serious relationship with someone if you do not find them attractive. That in itself should answer your questions. Just leave her a friend and don't overdue the time you spend with her.

This is not being shallow as I think it's common sense people don't marry people they find "ugly". Personality is very relevant but when it comes to intimacy and the long-run, you want someone who is attractive.
