Better safe than sorry.

Not that a helmet would have helped, but I snapped my collarbone snowboarding on Mt. Hood a few years back. I had to have a metal plate screwed in for it to heal. Apparently, collarbone breaks are among the most common snowboarding injuries, so that's an issue of which to be very mindful.
