In your mind you already know spirit doesn't have arms or form. So it would be impossible for her to hug you. Or even that you knew she was dead. Dead people don't hug. (you incorporated that into the dream)

Eyes closed. As much as you may feel you are "open" to the astral worlds, in some ways, your eyes are still closed.

For you the smudging was important and it helped you to feel safe. You still have some fears. That is why she was able to come through partially, but as you can see, some of your fears or doubts still made it seem odd.
