I've had this happen more frequently since I've been learning how to meditate. I have a black cat as a totem animal. The first time I saw him he was just a flash in my peripheral vision. Each time since then he comes more into my direct view for a longer time as if to say "can you see me? ". Other times I've seen my favorite yellow cat that passed away years ago. Just for a second he's there in full color, then poof! he's gone.

I love my animals. Sometimes I wonder how many are surrounding me that I don't see! LOL
