It makes perfect sense to me. The aliens are abducting the cheerleaders to entertain Elvis who is standing guard over the Ark like the mediaeval knight in 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade'. Mind you, it's nearly half past six here in the UK and it hasn't been on the news all day, perhaps it's hard for even the Ark of the Covenant to compete with Michael Jackson.
