I wonder if that's the reason why some hotels require you to present your credit card before they check you in. I stayed in a hotel in Hong Kong and they asked for my credit card although my company had already paid my accommodation in advance.
It's for incidentals like if you drink from the mini bar or order lunch by the pool and charge it to your room. You can still pay in cash at checkout of you want, it's just to protect them from you sneaking off in the middle of the night.

Also I would imagine it's a good way to encourage more consumption- it's a lot easier to buy little things if you don't have to pull out the cash everytime, and little things add up.
