Police arrest 3 youths for stoning cars
Writer: AMNART THONGDEE AND SUPAPONG CHAOLAN
CHUMPHON : Police have arrested three teenage boys after they admitted to hurling rocks at speeding cars for fun at the end of their drinking sessions.
Two of the boys, who allegedly threw rocks at moving vehicles on the night of Aug 5 in Tha Sae district, said they were imitating news reports of stone-throwing gangs on television, police said.
News of such attacks has been widely reported in the media and similar behaviour has cropped up in many provinces around the country, including Nakhon Pathom and Surat Thani.
Police said a third teen joined his friends in taking part in attacks in Thung Tako district. He allegedly confessed to police his gang threw soft drink bottles at approaching cars.
Both cases were related to the consumption of alcohol. The teenagers, aged 16 and 17, had carried out their attacks while drunk, police told a news conference yesterday.
There were at least six cases from Aug 1 to 8 involving rock and bottle throwing and sling shot attacks on moving vehicles at night on the Phetkasem and Asia 41 roads in Chumphon, Chumphon police chief Apichart Chueatet said. Officers had identified suspects and were gathering evidence to arrest them, he said.
Surat Thani has also become tougher with rock-throwing gangs.
Provincial governor Pracha Terat has vowed to act against parents if their children are found to be involved in such attacks. He said parents should share the responsibility of controlling their children's behaviour.
Surat Thani police have been told to patrol a section of the Asia 41 road between Chumphon, Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat to search for rock-throwers after 12 vehicles, mostly passenger coaches, were attacked on Sunday. There were no reports of injuries.
"We've told coach drivers and staff to try to remember the characteristics of the attackers and their car registration numbers," Pol Snr Sgt Maj Wisut Jaewtong said.
Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban yesterday said all provinces should have more frequent police patrols along roads to prevent the rock throwing.
