The people to contact for any stats etc... is the Thailand Foundation for Children. Their website is mainly in Thai, but there are some English lanagues pages too. A list of some orphanges too:

I checked the stats at another orphanage website (Thai language) no major difference between amount of girls and boys. In fact, their were more girls under their care.....than boys.

According to what i have read, putting a child into an orphange is only considered after all other possibilties have been exhausted. Father Joe's Mercy Center in the slums of Klong Tery is home to children, the majority of whom have come from parents who are either in prison or/and addicted to drugs/alcohol and have no other relatives who want/are able to to raise them. The Moo Baan Dek website above simply states that many children have actually been abandoned there.

Anyway, the next time your Thai girlfriend talks about going to make merit at a temple, advise making a visit/contribution to one of the orpahanges in the above website instead.
