lots of families pack up their picnic baskets, rice boxes, beers, etc and drive to the nearest beach / waterfall / lake / hot spring / national park, where they offload the car, walk 100 metres maximum, and have a picnic. the kids and teenagers enjoy splashing in the water, sometimes the adults too. there are always more food stalls, and inflated inner tubes for rent for the kids.
extended families spend more time together than in the west.
