Actually, I have had an experience of this working the other way. I once arrived in Bangkok, checked into my hotel, and went around the corner to the local Bank in a jet-lagged state.
I changed a travellers cheque and left the Bank. I was waiting to cross a busy road when the teller from the bank appeared at my elbow, asking me to return to the Bank.
It transpired she had paid me double of what she should have !
