well I think if you go to a bar or any other "dubious" place, you would want to make sure you have smaller denominations with you.
back home it is petrol stations where they constantly play these games. you would just *know* where you need to be careful.
I usually go to Rimping supermarket or 7-eleven to change a 1000-baht note. once I just bought a bar of chocolate or something, paid, took my bags and left. a minute later a young girl came running after me, bringing the 900-odd baht change that I had forgotten to take!
