there are a lot of foreigners earning half that as their basic salary. And they still manage to survive. To say the least, lol! There are foreigners who earn Thai wages (much less than any of the previously mentioned figures) and they are just fine. Like you said, Richard, it all depends on location and lifestyle.

They are not easy to get as they limit them to 100 people per nation. This is quite difficult for people from the US, UK etc., but the odds ain't so bad for folks who hail from obscure little nations.
