there was a murder a few days ago on Ko Samui, some 1200 km away from here, the one you seem to be referring to.

Chiang Mai is a peaceful place, it does not have such a bad reputation as Ko Samui for theft, pickpocketing and other crimes. (there seem to be more and more complaints all over the internet from people who have visited that island.) we had a motorcycle gang knocking down people two years ago at nights, but it's gone now, it's the worst wave of violence in recent times I have heard of. I would guess your chances of getting kidnapped and killed are higher just about anywhere in the "civilised" world.
