I always thought that thais were a little less judgemental about others' bodies, and in some cases this seems to be true. However in other ways I can certainly see serious "body image issues" in thailand. One only has to hear the stories of young girls getting liposuction from some quack (and often dying), or even breast implants. Eating disorders are also not uncommon, as well as drug use as a means to control/lose weight. I don't know if these problems are a "new" phenomenon for thailand or not, but it is sad no matter what country.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the beholder is also influenced by the things around him. We are all being sold an image. Products to buy that will make us thinner, more popular, sexier, more "potent", etc...
At least in thailand they have a wider variety of body types on tv, than in the usa for example.
