i have an account at bangkok bank, which cost me 300 baht, only with the passport. there is no monthly fee on my account - in fact i still have the bank booklet and the atm card with about 12 baht on it

i think i might just keep it until my next visit to thailand

however, you might want to take a thai friend with you when you open the account (and also if you want to do "complicated" transactions eg from farang account to thai account) because some of the people in the bank might let you wait for hours... just to tell you that you waited in the wrong queue, then she/he might give you some form you need to fill in... in thai

...or maybe your thai speaking/reading are good enough for this
