LOL!!! That could have been the reason for many misunderstandings, for sure. In my part of the woods, the interviews are conducted with the use of a translator (my language to English and vice versa), unless the inteviewee can speak reasonable English, in which case it becomes a direct conversation with the Consul - mine was almost like a chat.

That's why I thought speaking English might help in the case of Thai people as well, but apparently not. Maybe the Americans are Kreng Jai towards Thais and try to accomodate them by having the interview on their native language.
