Fine post Jake, that is exactly what he is looking for I think.

You noted a very important point I never even considered, yes many main courses are sweet as what we in USA would consider a desert dish. Some noodle dishes, and even beef and pork will be very ..... 'candied' I gues is what we would call it. I know the Philipino style red beef is very sweet with cane sugar. and my wife uses white sugar when she is making some noodles. Not sure about other types of sugars though.
