As far as I know it is actually the law in Thailand that you carry around with you your ID card (for Thais), or your passport (for foreigners) at all times every where you go. I think it's understandable that most places won't accept anything else apart from passports, given the type of fake ID that can be picked up cheaply at Khao San Road. In my experience earlier this year, in general it was a lot touger on asking for ID's everywhere regardless of how old you were or looked, though Hollywood and Dance Fever still seemed pretty lax about it to me.
