Yes, it is fiction, and a good one at that, in my opinion. (I didn't say otherwise before, did I? ). However, it would be a mistake to dismiss the informational value of a work, just because it involves fictional characters.

This is especially true in this case. It is almost certain that the author did background research for his book, because the social setting and the descriptions of some Thai customs match those that I have read in documentative, non-fictional works about Thailand.

Well, anyway. If we continue with this here, it is surely going to take this thread off-topic... So, I will start another topic about this book and its possible informational value (once I figure out where it would be appropriate to post "Literature about Thailand"). Perhaps others have read the story too, and might have some interesting input.
