Indonesian woman nabbed at Vietnam airport with drugs
Hanoi police have arrested an Indonesian woman for smuggling nearly 1.5 kilogram of methamphetamine into Vietnam.
Ana Safitri, 26, was arrested on April 25 at the Noi Bai Airport after seven bags of crystal methamphetamine, known as ice, were found in her luggage, VTC News reported.
Safitri told the police that an African man had hired her to carry the drug from Nigeria to Vietnam through Morocco, Qatar and Thailand.
She said that she was promised US$700 for delivering the drug to a Vietnamese man in downtown Hanoi.
Police are investigating the case further.
Last October, Ho Chi Minh City Customs Department found methamphetamine in the luggage of a Thai passenger at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport.
Preyanooch Phuttharaksa, a 22 year-old student who had just got off a plane from Doha to HCMC on October 29, was seized after customs officers discovered three packs of white solid substances at the bottom of her suitcase.
Subsequent test showed the packs contained methamphetamine, weighing around 3.1 kilograms. The passenger was later handed over to Vietnamese narcotics police for investigation.
Under Vietnamese laws, possession, transport, or trade of more than 600 grams of heroin or cocaine or more than 2.5 kilogram of methamphetamine can be punished with death.
Phuttharaksa and Safitri are among many drug smugglers caught at Vietnam’s international airports. Police have reported an increase in drug smuggling by air into Vietnam, with the smugglers using “more cunning ploys” by hiring women, including young students, to carry the drugs.
