Eleven people have survived a major gas explosion which obliterated a row of terraced houses early this morning. Emergency services were scrambled to the site of the explosion in the Irlam area of Salford, Manchester, at 7.09am and pulled six people from the rubble of the destroyed houses. The most seriously injured is a 76-year-old woman who has been taken to Wythenshawe Hospital with life-threatening injuries and 30 per cent burns.

Two adults and three children were also rescued from the wreckage but escaped with minor injuries and have been taken to the Salford Royal hospital. A total of 11 people were injured in the blast, which affected four houses. The remaining victims presented themselves to emergency services at a makeshift evacuation centre that was set up close by, said a spokesman for North West Ambulance Service. 'We had a pregnant lady and a small child, who had dust inhalation, one gentleman who was at home and his ceiling collapsed, and two others who were passing by and were hit by debris,' said the spokesman.

Knock on effect: As well as the houses destroyed in the explosion, properties on either side were also seriously damaged

The surrounding area has been evacuated and a nearby school is being used to house the displaced people. 'As a precautionary measure a 600 metre exclusion zone is in currently in place - involving approximately 200 houses,' said a spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire And Rescue Service. 'The National Grid are currently working to isolate the gas supply.'
