Fear and panic at blast site

CHERAS: Many residents of Block 2, Desa Tun Razak thought their 16-storey high flat was about to collapse and that they would be buried alive. This was because the narrow corridors of the flat could not handle the rush of so many residents who were trying to flee after hearing the massive explosion and feeling the building vibrate.

“I was jolted awake by a loud explosion. I rushed out of my flat and saw the whole corridor packed with a large crowd,” said Myanmar Aye Min Naing who works in an aluminium plant nearby. He said he was so afraid that he even thought of jumping from his top floor unit to escape. “We thought the building would collapse because the explosion was so loud and we felt tremors,” he added. Aye is among hundreds of foreigners who live in the two-block apartment.

Most of them occupy the higher levels of the apartment. One floor below, all housewife Suriani Mohd could think of when she heard the explosion was her children. “I rounded up all of them and we huddled together in our flat as we could not even get out of our door because of the mad rush,” she said. Suriani added that for a moment, she felt her world was going to end.

“The explosion was louder than a jet engine sound. The impact was so great it shattered windows all over the place,” she said adding that her three-year-old son suffered cuts from the flying debris. “When I saw rescue workers coming up, I knew that everything would be all right. I was so thankful to see them,” she added.

Contractor Zulkifli Yaakob, 34, and his family were sleeping when the blast happened. “I immediately told my family to pack up as, along with the blast, I smelt burning petrol and expected the worst,” he said. Residents also revealed that the victims operated a video gaming arcade on the ground floor of the building. “The victims have been doing that for more than three years,” one resident who refused to be named said. A check at the arcade found its doors locked.
