Defecting diplomat says Iran in disarray over international outcry of Ashtiani stoning
The international campaign to save Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, the Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning, has rocked the regime and kept her alive, a senior Iranian diplomat said, as he applied for political asylum in Finland today. The impact of the campaign has been “more than you can imagine”, Hossein Alizadeh told The Times, as he defected out of disgust at the regime’s election-stealing and brutality.
“Without that pressure she would have been stoned before this. I don’t have any doubt the international pressure on the regime is working.”
The regime was worried not only about its image throughout the world if Ms Ashtiani was stoned, but also about its standing at home where stoning is a deeply unpopular punishment, he said.
Mr Alizadeh, 45, has worked for the Iranian Foreign Ministry for 21 years and was second-in-command at the Iranian Embassy in Helsinki before he resigned last week.
