Additionally, if the evidence is so bad, the experts don't have to bring it to trial, can dismiss the trial, can possibly overturn a verdict, etc. A lot of very smart people saw enough to bring this to trial, even though it could cause tension with the US and even though the Italian boyfriend's family is quite well-connected.
