I'll be a jerk, an honest jerk, and say it really doesn't make a difference to me at all. I read somewhere that the number of deaths needed to desensitize the average American is 2... we're no more sympathetic to 200,000 or 2 million than we are to 2.
I don't think there is anything wrong with not being moved by a particular event (the Tsunami a few years ago just seemed impossibly remote to me). My only problem comes when people cast aspersions on the victims' fitness to even receive sympathy or help. You've been respectful, therefore I think there's no reason to consider you a jerk for feeling the way you do.
