I don't think there is anything wrong with not being moved by a particular event (the Tsunami a few years ago just seemed impossibly remote to me). My only problem comes when people cast aspersions on the victims' fitness to even receive sympathy or help. You've been respectful, therefore I think there's no reason to consider you a jerk for feeling the way you do.

Or propose that people who ARE moved to help are only doing so out of some desire to stay current with pop culture trends. I'd much rather stay current with beer trends but forwarded a modest remittance (to direct aid, disaster response charities) nonetheless in the spirit of paying for this weekend's case with credit. If people- myself included- won't or can't take from this how unfortunate the average disaster struck Haitian is maybe we can be reminded how fortunate we are by comparison. I literally thought of people in this disaster last night as I was cursing my stupid #$%*ing stuck zipper and thought, ffs, I need to chill.
