They didn't the last time.

They didn't when East Germany finally fell apart.
Population wise it's a young nation, the median age is 27 and that could be a big factor in a shift of power. The U.S. median age is about 10 years older. With the Internet, going to school in the west and high unemployment the people who are protesting know what they are missing. True or not they feel that their vote did not count and a change could happen sooner than later.
The younger people in the army may also not be as committed to the existing leaders. Of course I could be 100% and they will all be slaughtered.
