In fact - one elephant - Dulary - was sent to a sanctuary in May 2007.
One elephant, Petal, died in June 2008 after collapsing in the cement barn. She had arthritis in her hips, elbows and knees so severe that she was unable to rise. When her keepers arrived in the morning, it was too late and she died.
The surviving two elephants, Kallie and Bette, both 27 years old, were shipped on July 8, 2009 to a breeding-holding facility outside Pittsburgh where the zoo has previously stated they will be bred, first through forced breeding with a bull elephant, and if that doesn't work, then through artificial insemination, an extremely invasive and painful procedure. Since Kallie and Bette are both 27 and have not been bred before, the chances they will get pregnant at all is very slight, and if they do, ample zoo industry data shows it is likely that they or their calf will die or suffer from a life-threatening condition.
Despite repeated requests, no updates have been provided on Kallie or Bette since they moved in, except for one staged media event in late July.
