i think it is important to remember that very very few pay "list price" for college education. i'm sure the numbers are available, but i'm too lazy to look. it would be interesting to see what the listed tuition cost is for private and public universities versus what students actually pay to attend.
I actually do agree with this point... Most people do get offered some sort of financial aid, be it subsidized or grants or scholarships or whatever. And if you don't get offered money to any school, you probably are applying to schools that are out of your range.

I know that my bf got into a few schools, including Penn and a full-ride to a couple colleges. He chose Penn. I've asked him if he regrets not going to one that offered him a free ride, now that he's juggling a massive amount of student loans... and he said sometimes, but usually no. He wouldn't trade it in for the quality of education he got at an Ivy League institution. So I suppose it's all a matter of weighing the pros and cons for some.
