Statistically, once per week somewhere around the world an airliner is struck (destroyed) in some type of mishap. Usually they happen in obscure places so people don't pay that much attention, but sometimes it hits closer to home. I personally think that we are coming out of a couple year period of amazingly safe flying; at any given time there are 40,000 people in the air over America, the population of a small town.
